The Dzongri & Goecha La Trek of Sikkim

The trek of Dzongri and Goecha La is one of the renowned treks in the Himalayan state – Sikkim in India. It provides a panoramic view of the Kanchenjunga range of mountains. Enroute on the trail, one can find the different species of flora and fauna that are spread across the different altitudes. You will get to see the vast forest with different varieties of rhododendrons while trekking on this trail. Also, one can spot several monasteries on the mountains and the region also exhibits the cultural essence of the Bhutias, Lepchas and Nepalis.

Day 01ARRIVAL DELHI 

On your arrival meet our representative and transfer to hotel. Afternoon, proceed for Delhi sightseeing with Humayun Tomb of the Mughal Emperor and drive through the India Gate & President House and reach Rickshaw ride point. Explore Chandni Chowk on the Rickshaw in the heart of Old Delhi a busy shopping area with Bazaar full of spices and marriage saris through crowded narrow side streets and reach Jama Masjid largest mosques of India.

 

Day 02DELHI – BAGDOGRA – SILIGURI

After breakfast, transfer to Delhi airport to board the flight for Bagdogra which is the nearest airport to Sikkim. Meet our representative and drive to Siliguri – the third largest city in West Bengal. On arrival, check-in at the hotel. Overnight in Siliguri.

 

 

Day 03SILIGURI – YUKSOM 1875 m (Drive 6 hrs)

Today you drive to the town of Yuksom, which was once the capital of Sikkim state. Yuksom is the starting point of Dzongri and Goechala trek. On arrival, check-in at the hotel. Overnight in Yuksom.

 

Day 04YUKSOM – TSHOKA 3000 m (Trek 6 hrs)

Post breakfast, start the trek for Tshoka which is around 18 kms from Yuksom and takes approximately 7-8 hours via Sachen. The trail passes through the rhododendrons, oak and pine forests. You will be crossing around 4 bridges across different rivers. Late afternoon, reach Tshoka that has beautiful terraced farms. Overnight in camp at Tshoka.

Day 05TSHOKA – DZONGRI 4030 m  (Trek 6 hrs)

After breakfast, start the trek for Dzongri. This will be a bit lengthy day of the trekking where the altitude would gain around 1000m. The trail passes through high and thick rhododendrons that brink the wooden path. Passing through Phedang you ascend to Deurali which is a highpoint welcoming with prayer flags and shrine. It is also a view point of some snowy peaks. Thereafter, take a steady downhill climb to Dzongri. Reach Dzongri and overnight in camp.

Day 06DZONGRI  

This day wake up early in the morning and go for a hike to Dzongri Top from where one can witness the sunrise and the rays of sun reflecting on the snow-capped peaks. Also, from this point you get the 180 degree panoramic view of the mighty peaks of Kanchenjunga ranges. After spending some time here descend down to the campsite and have a breakfast. Rest of the day you can take short hikes around. Overnight in camp at Dzongri.

Day 07DZONGRI - THANGSING 3930m (Trek 5 hrs) 

Morning after breakfast, start the hike to next campsite Thangsing. Starting from Dzongri, the trail goes a bit uphill and then down straight into the valley till Prek Chu river. You will find maximum rhododendron trees on the way and the forest is a good place to spot birds also. Reach Thangsing and overnight in camp.

Day 08THANGSING - LAMUNE 4130m (Trek 4 hrs) 

After breakfast, start the trek for Lamune which is around 3 hours from Thangsing. The trail passes through the meadows along the Prek Chu River. As you get closer to Lamune, the trail gets rocky and steep. You may trek further to Samiti Lake and spend some time there. Overnight in camp at Lamune.

 

Day 09LAMUNE - GOECHA LA 4940m (Trek 5 hrs) 

Being a long day of the trekking and the most strenuous hike as you will pass through the Goecha La. Start early in the morning, passing through the Samiti Lake and then descend to a sandy stretch of dried lake called Zemathang Plateau. Cross this and after climbing for 2 hours you reach Goecha La. Spend some time there and witness spectacular views of the mighty Kangchendzonga and the surrounding peaks. Thereafter, trek to Thangsing.

Day 10THANGSING - TSHOKA 3000m (Trek 7 hrs) 

Today start walking back towards Tshoka by another route. The trail skips Dzongri and passes through oaks and rhododendrons forests, gradually up and down which makes it a bit easy. Reach Tshoka and overnight in camp.

 

Day 11TSHOKA - YUKSOM 1875m (Trek 6 hrs) 

After breakfast, trek from Tshoka to Yuksom which is much easier and faster. Till Sachen, it is a pure descent and from there the trail is up and down. Only the last stretch has a few climbs but soon it gets over and you reach Yuksom. Overnight in Yuksom.

 

Day 12YUKSOM - DARJEELING  (Drive 6 hrs) 

Morning after breakfast, drive from Yuksom to Darjeeling. Darjeeling, often known as the queen of hills is a quaint colonial hill station. It is a land of the aromatic Darjeeling tea cherished by the tea specialists around the globe. Darjeeling is also the land of the world heritage Darjeeling Himalayan Railways. On arrival, check-in at the hotel. Overnight in Darjeeling.

Day 13DARJEELING  

Early morning, drive to Tiger Hill to witness the stunning view of Mt. Khangchendzongha. Spend some time there and drive back to hotel via Ghoom Monastery – one of the oldest Buddhist monasteries in Darjeeling and Batasia Loop – created for the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway. Post breakfast, proceed for a local sightseeing of the place visiting Himalayan Mountaineering Institute, Tenzing Rock, Tea Garden and Japanese Temple. Overnight in Darjeeling.

Day 14DARJEELING - BAGDOGRA - DELHI 

Morning after breakfast, check-out from the hotel and drive to Bagdogra airport to board the flight for Delhi. On arrival at Delhi, board your flight for the onward journey.
